I Am Home

cover_white

‘I Am Home’ is an exhibition that presents a selection of drawings, limited edition prints and mixed media sketchbooks that were created by invitation of a Portuguese gallery Atelier 3 I 3. These works are based on the themes of ‘Home’ and ‘Identity’ as well as the intersection and crossover between them. The project also includes a zine ‘Home’ and a mini zine ‘I Am’ created in collaboration with (and by invitation of) Atelier 3 I 3, Porto, Portugal. The exhibition took place in July-August 2019. Some of the prints are still available in my shop, or at the stockists in London - Migration Museum and Of Cabbages And Kings. The project won 'Best Of The Best' award at the HiiiiBrand Illustration Competition 2019.

What is home?

At first we don’t realise that we have a ‘home’. We are one with the world. Then we outgrow home, we leave home... or we lose home. We miss home. We seek home. We build home. We find a home in another. We become a home to another.
We return home.
We are home.
Is it a place? Is it a thing? Is it outside? Is it within?
Inside of what?
Outside of what?
Am I a home?
What is home?

Who am I?

We all seek our literal or metaphorical homes, whether we left or lost them. That search is at the heart of our odyssey through life and ultimately defines who we are.
I approached Home and Identity as one theme rather than two. Home is about belonging, being fully yourself. In Jungian symbolism a home / house usually represents one’s psyche. The idea of home is inseparable from the idea of one’s identity. How do we know who we are when ‘our world’ falls apart? Who will I choose to be when I can no longer be who I was? Our relationship with the concept of home transforms as we continually transform on the path of self-realisation. Once we find ourselves - we find the home we seek.

The project included 4 sketchbooks and 2 zines - a zine about "Home", and another one about "Identity". I have asked my friends what Home is for them and surprisingly never received two similar answers. Most people in big multicultural cities came from somewhere else, and the idea of what Home is has become quite blurred for our nomadic generation, and I've tried to explore as many aspects of it as I could.

This zine is based on sketchbooks that were used to research the theme of 'Home". It's printed in black and white on Xerox and each copy has unique drawings with coloured pencils and Posca pens. Each zine has an individual quote, suggested by my friends.

Below is a minizine called 'I am', exploring the question of identity and self. I couldn’t find an answer to the question 'Who am I?' so I turned to some great minds who have tried to.... which left me even more confused.  You can see all the spreads here.

This project was created in 2019, and obviosuly in 2020 the theme of HOME suddenly revealed its other layers of meaning, and has shown its shadow side - how a safe haven can become a prison, a confinement. Here I'm telling the story of the project as seen from 2020 to the People Of Print.

Thanks for watching!
